I was in the the scrap silver business. I would buy and recover the silver from
used film. Yankee Magazine in Dublin, NH was one of my customers.
Just at the corner of Yankee Publications building was a sign saying Harrisville
4 miles.
It was a nice summer's day and for some unknown reason felt compelled to take
the road. Winding up a mountainous road I came upon a town lost in
time....Really! Unlike the pictures below, the mills were in poor
shape. But it was clear that for some reason, all the old buildings seemed
to be frozen in 1850! ....I kept looking over my shoulder thinking I got caught
in an episode of the Twilight Zone.
It was a classic design for a mill village. A large lake...dammed off.... a
canal to divert the water right underneath the stone mill building.... Elegant
brick homes for the managers....row houses made of wood for the workers. I
was floored! Prior to the internet, all the information I could only
find was that the town was still owned by one family. To a Boston
boy, this was the boonies. Its isolation must have helped it
survive.
I was in Keene, NH on
business the other day and took a detour to take these pictures. Much
fixed up but still in the boonies. Still just as charming.
If you want to really see
the gem of all mill villages...go to Harrisville, NH!
