Falls Manufacturing Mill
On the Salmon Falls River dividing Berwick, Maine and Somersworth, NH is a mill known as Great Falls Mfg Company. Mills once lined this river producing textiles, shoes and dyed fabric to the world. Today, this is really the last of the mills left on the river. The GE plant down the road is sadly half closed and falling apart. (Up until 8 years ago it made electric meters...now ....guess what? ....GE makes them in Mexico) The mill is classic New
England Mill styling. The Salmon River is dammed at the beginning of the
complex. A gate house (still in operation today ...by electronic controls)
diverts the water either to the fabulous canal or to the river depending on
water flow. Originally, the canal had other gates to divert the water under the
mill itself ...moving wheels....attached to belts...attached to wheels...
to turn the machinery. Later electric motors replaced the water driven
generators. Those generators are long gone In the 1980's the building was rehabbed. Page 5
